SOLD AS A SINGLE EARRING On a recent visit to South Korea, Sojin was on her way to see her mother at work and, while in the Subway station, came across an unusually shaped earring that she had never encountered in the West. The Nunmul earring, which means “tear” in Korean, resembles a teardrop circling back into itself, an infinite droplet within which an immortal love orbits. The Nunmul encapsulates the inspiration for the line, which is an homage to Sojin’s mother, whose penchant for foraging for exquisite things became an inherited trait. Forgoing symmetry and idealizations of perfection, Sojin’s mother shares with her a preference for organic, raw forms that reflect a natural order. In contrast to the humanist order at the core of much jewelry design, they choose emotionality over stoic intellectualism and nature over civilization.
