As a woman who immigrated to the West at a young age, Sojin has fought both time and space to maintain an impregnable connection with her Korean family and her mother has been a central conflict. She wakes up thinking about them every morning and, despite modern technology, the time differential creates a barrier to communication. These are not tears of sadness, they are tears of love, tears of an ocean that separates, but also connects Sojin to her family. Uyu is the Korean word for “milk,” and like milk, produced by billions of mothers across the history of species, these tears ultimately nourish a loving spirit. The elemental droplet is close to Roses’ heart as it relates to her first successful design - the Costolo drip earrings.
